Mangalore possesses a rich historical past. Mangaluru(Mangalore) which is bounded by the Arabian sea and the western ghats is Parashurama’s shristi and named after the goddess mangaladevi It is believed that Parashurama, the sixth avathar of Vishnu, destroyed the Kshatriya kings and donated the land to sage Kashyapa. As he believed, staying in the land which he donated is not right. He made in-depth remorse of the past conduct and meditation of Lord Shiva on Sahyadri mountrain region looking for new land for him to take refuge. Lord Shiva moved by his prayers, appeared before him and said he will incarnate in the form of Lord Manjunatha for the benefit of mankind and asked him to meditate upon him at Kadalivana (which is now Kadri).  When Parashurama took a look at Kadalivana which was far from Sahyadri mountain, it seemed to be ocupied by the ocean. Kadri Manjunatheshwara Temple is located in Mangalore. It is the spectacular temple of Lord Manjunatha or Lord Shiva on the Kadri hills. The temple is a complete depiction of early Vijayanagara architecture dating back to 10 th  and 11 th  century AD. The location of the temple is overwhelming with the presence of the deity of the temple, and the marvelous hillocks of the Kadri hills, which has many caves cut into the hills. Dharmasthala is an Indian temple town on the banks of the Nethravathi River in the Belthangadi taluk of the Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, India. I 800 years. Local legend says that the Shiva Linga in Dharmasthala was brought to Dharmasthala by a local person with great powers, named Annappa. Legend is that he used to work for the Heggade family. Once when the Heggade he was serving wanted to worship Lord Shiva, Annappa had assured him of getting one linga and vanished from the sight. Next morning, he had already established the linga in Dharmasthala, a few metres away from Heggade’s house. Around the 16th century, Shri Devaraja Heggade invited Shri Vadiraja Swami of Udupi to visit the place. Swamiji visited the place but refused to accept the Bhiksha. The reason behind this was the Manjunatha Idol was not placed as per the Vedic rituals. Now, Shri Devaraja Heggade requested Swamiji to complete this. Sri Karinjeshwara Temple is a famous Lord Shiva temple located in a place called Karinja. It lies in the Bantwal taluk of the Dakshina Kannada district. This temple is perched on the top of a peak in the village of Karinja. It offers a magnificent view of the surroundings from the top of a hill. This temple is distributed into two parts- one is for Lord Shiva and the other part is for Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. There are about 355 steps to reach the temple. The temple of Goddess Parvati lies a little lower down on your way to the Shiva temple.

Meanwhile Arunasura performs a rigorous penance to gets a boon from Lord Brahma, which he would not suffer death by Devas, Danavas, Men or Women, any two legged or four legged creature or any weapons. Brahma also blessed him with Gayatri Mantra. This makes Arunasura free from fear of death and he becomes more powerful. Arunasura wages war on gods and defeats them and conquers devaloka. Tulunadu bisu parba(new year)

  Different regions of the country have a specific festival which marks the start of the New Year. While Ugadi/Yugadi is the festival for Karnataka, Bisu or Vishu festival is the day of New Year for Tulu region of Karnataka, that includes, Mangalore, Udupi, Kasargod. The New Year for Kerala and Tamil Nadu is also on the same day, April 14th of every year. This day marks the Solar New Year, called “Bisu Parba” in Tulu. Bisu Parba also celebrates the harvest of the previous year and sowing for the New Year begins with Bisu. In Bisu Parba, the harvest is offered to God and is worshipped in farming houses, which is called the “Bisu Kani”. This “Bisu Kani” is practiced among the farmers. With shrinking agriculture, the other families go visit the farmers’ houses, or their ancestral houses, or temples where the harvest is worshipped. The families that offer “Bisu Kani” take blessings from elders and do also visit their relatives’ 

Pilivesha or tigerdance

Hulivesha  or  Pilivesha  in  tulu  "Tiger Masque"  is a folkdance unique to the Tulunadu region of Karnataka.HulivÄ“á¹£a is performed during Navarathri to honour the Goddess Durga whose favoured animal is the tiger. Manglore dasara is one of the festivals during which large number of enthusiasts participate in this ritual. It is also performed during the Krishnajanmajstami/Mosarukudike and Ganesh chatterbox at Manglore, Udupi,Moodabidri many other places in Tulunadu. Typically, young males form troops of five to ten members or more, which will have three to five males painted and costumed to look like tigers, and a band called  thaase  in Tulu with two or three drummers. This troop is accompanied by the manager of the group. During Navratri, these troops will be roaming the streets of their towns, with the accompanying drum beats of their bands. They stop at homes and businesses or on the road sides to perform for about ten minutes after which they collect some money from

It is believed that the twins, `Koti' -'Chennaya' lived four century ago, (Circa 1556 A.D to 1591 A.D.) and fought for truth and justice during the feudal era. They are worshiped annually in a special shrine called 'garooDi' maintained by two of the major communities of Coastal Karnataka - the 'Billavas' and 'Bunts'. Today 230 'GaroDis’ or shrines have been identified in and around Coastal Karnataka. The Method of preparing 1/2 Kg chicken pulimunchi is explained here with the list of Ingradients Chicken-Half kg roasted chillies-5 to 10 coriander seeds-1.5 to 2 tb spoon cumin seeds-1/2 tsp cinnamon-small piece fenugreek-1/2 tsp cloves-1 onion-2 to 4 Medium Sized garlic-3 to 4 cloves turmeric-1/2 tsp pepper-6-8 tamarind- Small ghee-2-3 tb spoon salt-as per taste Method of Making Tulunad Chicken Puli Munchi Take 1 table spoon of ghee in a pan. add garlic cloves, 2 sliced onions and fry for 2 to 3 min.now add cinnamon piece,pepper,cloves ,coriander seeds,cumin seeds,fenugreek and fry till the onion turns into golden brown in colour.now take the roasted chillies,tamarind,turmeric and the above said fried ingredients in a mixer and grind it into fine paste.  Nagaradhane is a for of Snake worship which, along with Bhuthakola, is one of the unique traditional prevalention in coastal district of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and kasaragod alternatively known as Tulunadu, practiced by Tulunadu community  members. Snakes are not just seen as deities, but as an animal species which should be respected,appeared and protected for multiple social, religious and ecological reasons,.
